The Kansas City Comets rolled past the Dallas Sidekicks on Saturday to win their season-opener 8-5 in Dallas.
The Comets entered the matchup with Alvaro Beltran, Robert Kelly, Ignacio Flores, Mirko Sandivari, Gui Gomes, and Mark Saxby all missing the trip to Texas. Hector Solorio was available on the bench, but did not play.
The Sidekicks found the opening three goals from a Kevin Ellis own goal that was credited to Lipe Andrade before Felipe De Sousa scored a pair to give the hosts a 3-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes. Just as they did in the Central Cup, the Comets grew into the game as it progressed and answered with three goals of their own from rookies Kyle McLagan, Rian Marques, and Lucas Sousa.
Kevin Ellis led the Comets with a second half hat trick as the Comets outscored the Sidekicks 5-2 with Ramone Palmer and Lucas Sousa adding to the tally as well in the final two periods to come away with the 8-5 win.
This win puts the Comets in first place of the MASL alongside the Florida Tropics, who beat the St. Louis Ambush 4-1, after the opening day of action in the MASL. The Sidekicks are joined by the St. Louis Ambush at the bottom of the table.
Including the Central Cup and the end of last season, the Comets have extended their winning streak to five games, in which all of them have been come-from-behind wins with four of them on the road. During that stretch, player-coach Leo Gibson has just two goals while Kevin Ellis has eight.
Saturday’s comeback was started with three straight goals from rookies, including a missile from Kyle McLagan before Rian Marques used his size to hold off a defender and find the bottom corner. Rookie midfielder Lucas Sousa scored a brace, which was engineered with great calmness in front of goal.
The final interesting note is that the Comets killed all three powerplays. Even with half of last season’s powerplay team gone in Stefan Stokic and Robert Palmer, the Comets still managed to defend well down a man. KC will look to be more effective when on the powerplay themselves, as the Comets missed their opportunity with a 5 v 3 powerplay in the first half.
The Comets will continue their four-game road trip with a doubleheader in the Sunshine State against the Florida Tropics next weekend.
