An 8-year-old boy and a 24-year-old woman in Houston were wounded Thursday night when struck by apparent celebratory gunfire in separate incidents, authorities said.
In the first shooting, the boy was asleep at about 11:50 p.m. at an apartment on the 2600 block of Garden City Drive when a stray bullet ripped through a wall and struck his hand, said Lt. Emanuel Pavel of the Houston Police Department. He was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive.
About half an hour later in the backyard of a home on the 1700 block of Fulton Street, a man believed to be in his 60s, described as “heavily intoxicated,” started firing his gun in a “celebratory fashion” when one of the bullets hit his 24-year-old granddaughter in the stomach, Pavel said, citing preliminary information. Authorities arrested the man, whose identity was not immediately released.
The woman was taken to a hospital, where she was alert and expected to go into surgery early Friday.
Both shootings remained under investigation.
“It’s all over the city,” Pavel said of people firing guns to celebrate the new year. “It’s unfortunate that on a day when people should be celebrating and having a good time they end up either hurting someone else or even killing somebody.”
It was not clear how many people were wounded throughout the night by gunfire.
