8 more Northland residents die from COVID-19 - Duluth News Tribune

Eight more Northland residents have lost their lives to COVID-19 as of Wednesday.

Seven of them lived in St. Louis County. Four of those people were residents of long-term care or assisted living facilities, according to the county's COVID-19 dashboard.

One of the people from St. Louis County was in their early 50s, another was in their late 50s and one person was in their late 60s. The other four were between ages 80 and 99. St. Louis County has now lost 220 people to the illness.

Itasca County lost its 41st resident to COVID-19. The person was in their early 70s, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

Also on Wednesday, the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota reported that 171 more people in the 10-county region tested positive.

  • Ashland — 8; 5.9.
  • Bayfield — 9; 4.1.
  • Douglas — 14; 17.6.

Minnesota reported 2,346 more cases and 67 new deaths. Wisconsin reported 3,406 new cases and 60 deaths.

The state of Minnesota added 310 more vaccinations to its total number of Minnesotans who have received a COVID-19 vaccine, none of which were in Northeastern Minnesota.

Minnesota reported on Wednesday that more than 81,000 residents had received a vaccine. That data is likely a couple days old. It can take up to 48 hours for new data to be included in the state's vaccine numbers updated every week day.

As of Tuesday, 80 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Northeastern Minnesota, according to state data updated every week day with hospital capacity numbers from the previous day.

At the same time, about 20%, or 20, intensive care beds in the region were available and about 19%, or 129, non-ICU beds were available.
