Here are things to know for Friday, Jan. 8:

1. President Trump condemns supporters who rioted at Capitol, concedes to Biden in new video

President Donald Trump is conceding to President-elect Joe Biden and condemning the violent supporters who stormed the nation’s Capitol Wednesday.

In a new video message, Trump says that now that Congress has certified the results, the “new administration will be inaugurated on January 20” and his “focus now turns to ensuring a smooth orderly and seamless transition of power.”

2. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee introduces Articles of Impeachment against President Trump

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. This comes one day after a pro-Trump riot at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and the Budget, in a statement, said: “Our Constitution was written as a guide for governing our democracy and to protect it from authoritarian and tyrannical control. It also serves as a tool to protect our nation from both foreign and domestic enemies who intend to do harm to our Republic. At this moment in our history, our Constitutional forefathers are crying out for us to use the tools provided in this ageless document. Yesterday, we saw domestic enemies incite violence and invade the people’s house with intent to harm. Enough is enough! 3. ‘Both of us felt disturbed’: Local couple attending Trump’s rally recalls protest at US Capitol

A Houston-area couple was in Washington, D.C. to attend President Trump’s event on Wednesday.

“We did not come to be a part of any violence or riots or anything like that,” said Karen Middlebrook.

They said even when people moved to the US Capitol, from what they saw, it remained peaceful.

“Both of us felt disturbed. It did not reflect us, for sure, and it didn’t reflect all the people that we saw there,” said Don Al Middlebrook.

Now, they said it’s time for Americans to unite.

“This is the way it’s going to be if that’s exactly what happens and probably will. We’ve had presidents in our lifetime that we don’t agree with, but we pray for our leaders. That’s what we have to do,” said Don Al Middlebrook.

The highly contagious COVID-19 variant strand, first found in the United Kingdom, is being reported in Harris County and the state of Texas, according to Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo.

Hidalgo tweeted, “We’ve confirmed the FIRST Texas case of the more contagious, ‘British’ #COVID19 strand #B117 in Harris County. This is disturbing. Along with our recent trends, we could be on the road to a crisis if we don’t change our behavior NOW. Do your part.”

She said the variant strand is 70% more contagious but no evidence has been shown that it’s more lethal on its own.

5. Local doctor breakdowns COVID-19 variant first seen in UK, now reported in Harris County

The COVID-19 variant first discovered in the United Kingdom has now been reported in Harris County. The new strain, known as B117, is considered to be 50% more contagious.

Health experts believe it spreads more efficiently because of changes to its spike protein, which can more easily dock onto human cells.

“The good news is, it does not appear to be any different in how severe a case of COVID folks will get,” said Dr. Linda Yancey, an Infectious Disease Specialist at Memorial Hermann.
