NO. 8 BULLDOGS SIMPLY TOO MUCH FOR MINNESOTA STATE IN 7-3 TRIUMPH - UMD Bulldogs

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

When all the ice chips had finally settled Saturday afternoon in the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center, the No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team hadn't just picked up a series sweep against Minnesota State University, Mankato.  The Bulldogs had issued a statement.

UMD scored an overwhelming seven goals against the Mavericks, en route to a 7-3 win in the first completed Western Collegiate Hockey Association series of the 2020-21 season.  The Bulldogs were led by junior winger Anneke Linser's four points on two goals and two assists, as well as two goals each for junior Kylie Hanley (who also added an assist) and senior Anna Klein.  All told, six players had multiple-point outings and UMD put up the most goals in a regular-season game in six seasons.

"A great character win today," said Bulldog head coach Maura Crowell. "Overcoming the erratic second period and coming out of it with a lead, and ultimately a win, shows our ability to respond to adversity and thrive under pressure."

Compared to the final 40 minutes, the first period was a breeze.  Klein netted the lone goal to give UMD its first lead midway through, making good on a pass from Gabbie Hughes at 9:04.

After a first period void of penalties and with only Klein's tally on the scoreboard, the second period turned the contest on its head.  UMD lost Hughes after she was slammed to the ice and then helped off of it right before the five-minute mark, and the Mavericks pounced on a power play goal from Kennedy Bobyck at 7:09 to equalize at 1-1.  Linser put the Bulldogs back up 2-1 with a shorthanded backhand at 7:52, but MSU answered again a little over a minute later. Armed with an extra skater, the Mavericks drilled down for their second power play goal of the game, this time from Madison Oelkers at 8:58.

The Mavericks then took their first lead of the series at 12:03 when the puck bounced long off the backboards to Kelsey King for the 3-2 MSU go ahead goal.  But Hanley didn't even let the announcer finish saying King's name when the junior forward had already drawn the Bulldogs even at 3-3, a mere 14 seconds later.  Freshman Clara Van Wieren buried a puck left out on the line at 18:00 to help UMD reclaim the advantage, and after 20 minutes of pure chaos in terms of goals and power plays, the Bulldogs were still on top 4-3.

There would be no mixed messages for UMD in the third period, however, and the Bulldogs overpowered MSU on both the scoreboard with three tallies and with shots on goal, which were a lopsided 15-5 in the stanza.  All three goal scorers in the third period owned goals in the previous 40 minutes, including Hanley who gave the Bulldogs a 5-3 lead 4:18 into the period.  Linser struck again with a far-side blast that pinged in off the post at 9:44, and Linser also iced the game at 18:53 when she slid a 2-on-1 puck over to Klein, who buried her second score of outing to chill the Mavericks at 7-3.

Nine players got on the scoresheet in junior goaltender Emma Soderberg's second win of the season.  Soderberg made 22 saves to complete her first-ever collegiate series, while her counterpart for MSU, Calla Frank, had 40.  The Mavericks held UMD scoreless in four power play attempts, while the Bulldogs went 2-of-6 on its own penalty kill.

UMD will host the No. 4 University of Minnesota next weekend at AMSOIL Arena in a Friday-Saturday WCHA series.  Friday's game will get underway at 6:07 p.m., while Saturday's matinee is set to start at 3:07 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES:  UMD's seven goals was the most by a squad in a regular season game since the Bulldogs put up 12 against Minnesota State on Jan. 23, 2015 in a 12-0 win over the Mavericks in Mankato … The Bulldogs are now unbeaten in their last 15 games against MSU … Anneke Linser's four points (2g, 2a) is a single-game career-high for the junior, who has posted three points in a game twice before … Defenseman Ashton Bell led all scorers in the series with five points on a goal and four assists.
