Eight Newark restaurants have been issued summonses after employees were caught not wearing masks while serving customers during the first two days of a Mayor Ras Baraka’s 10-day recommended lockdown, officials said on Saturday.

The restaurants include both fast food and take-out eateries, according to a police spokeswoman.

“These businesses showed a total disregard for spreading the virus,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said in a statement. “All those cited were found not wearing masks and other (personal protection equipment) while serving customers.”

The request that residents shelter in place began Wednesday and runs until Dec. 4 and follows Gov. Phil Murphy’s executive order earlier this month to lower both the indoor and outdoor gathering limits in an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

“While we strongly support our business owners, unfortunately there are still some who have refused to abide by the Governor’s order,” Ambrose said. “It’s our responsibility to hold those businesses accountable for their actions.”

While non-essential businesses in Newark are required to close by 8 p.m. essential businesses that sell food can remain open later.

A total of 15,636 COVID-19 cases have been reported in Newark since the pandemic began in March, Essex County officials reported Saturday. That number includes 34 additional cases on Friday. There have been 708 deaths attributed to the virus in the state’s largest city.
