Update: 8 displaced after apartment fire on West Hillcrest Drive Thursday - DeKalb Daily Chronicle

DeKALB – Eight residents are out of a home after an apartment fire on West Hillcrest Drive Thursday damaged two units, said DeKalb Fire Chief Jeff McMaster.

Two apartments were damaged after a blaze in the College Park apartment complex, 1121 West Hillcrest Drive. A two-story unit, where the fire started, displaced six people, McMaster said, while the neighboring unit suffered smoke and heat damage and displaced two more.

There were no reported injuries to tenants of the complex owned by Hunter Star Properties, or to firefighters, he said.

McMaster said crews responded to reports of a structure fire about 5:46 p.m. Thursday.

"We had a report of heavy smoke in the area, so when they arrived on scene, they had heavy fire on the first and second floor throughout the building," McMaster said. "They did an aggressive interior attack."

McMaster said firefighters determined most residents had evacuated the building already, but did a sweep of the inside just in case.

"Turns out that everybody was able to get out safely," he said. "But we did have eight people displaced."

A citywide text alert was sent out about 6:30 p.m. Thursday asking resident to avoid the area. The road was closed on Hillcrest in the 1100 block west of Annie Glidden Road, and the city sent out another alert about 8 p.m. reporting the road was reopened.

McMaster said the fire was largely contained to one two-story unit, but heat and smoke damaged the neighboring one.

"We got [the fire] knocked down pretty quick," McMaster said, adding the fire took about 90 minutes to get under control.

"The fire apartment is fully gutted," he said. "It's completely burnt out on both levels, and then the townhouse right next door just has minor heat and smoke damage, but enough that some repairs will have to be made before we can let them occupy their apartment."
