Delaware’s rate of positive coronavirus cases soared to eight percent as of Wednesday night, the Delaware Division of Public Health reported on Thursday.
A total of 156 positive cases were reported on Wednesday night, with the seven-rolling average at 118.
The University of Delaware’s coronavirus dashboard has reported 66 cases between Monday and Thursday. The 19711 zip code, which includes much of the UD campus reported 42 cases on Thursday with a rate of positive cases from those tested of 11 percent.
The 19805 zip code, which includes areas to the west of Wilmington, reported a 12 percent rate of positive tests over a seven-day period, with the rate jumping to 17 percent on Wednesday.
The number of people hospitalized rose from 64-78, with 17 in critical condition. While the number of people hospitalized with the virus is well below the more than 300 reported in the spring, it is still higher than the 50 to 60 cases reported in recent weeks.
Hospital officials also cautioned that more seriously ill Covid-19 patients were being admitted to hospitals.
The positve case rate has been in the seven percent range as positive cases increased in the Newark area and some Wilmington-area zip codes.
In the weeks leading up to Labor Day, the positive case rate had fallen into the four and a half percent range.
A five percent figure is viewed as a sign of moderate spread of the virus.
