With the 2020 fall sports season canceled by the COVID-19 outbreak, we at Fordham have decided to dig back through our archives and provide our fans with content on some of the outstanding teams and student-athletes who have graced Rose Hill over the years.

Cambridge, Mass. - (Oct. 24, 2010) - At the 46th Head of the Charles regatta which is attended by 8,000 athletes from around the world and over 300,000 spectators each year, the Fordham Varsity 8 completed their best ever finish as the top collegiate crew in their event placing second overall in a field of 30 competitors.

2010 V8 in action at the Head of the CharlesThe Rams finished with a time of 17:51.696 in the Club Eights event, which was about ten seconds behind Boston's Riverside Boat Club and just over 12 seconds faster than nearest collegiate competitor Yale University which placed 3rd. The Fordham 8 also finished about 44 seconds in front of two boats from the University of Connecticut (5th & 6th place), as well as boats from Radcliffe (8th), U. of Alabama (9th), Northeastern (12th), Trinity (14th), Holy Cross (16th), Villanova (21st), Boston College (25th), and Xavier University (29th).
 
The Fordham Club 8 was comprised of Alyssa Sunofsky(8), Celine Egraz (7),  Maureen White (6), Elizabeth Anderson (5), Kayla Gaskey (4), Elizabeth Helmer (3),Katie Helmer (2), Kate Branciforte (1), with Abigail Paparo at coxswain.

Fordham also entered boats in the Champ Fours and Club Fours events. The Club 4 boat also had an excellent race placing 12th out of 51 competitors guaranteeing an entry into the event next year. The Rams club 4 was the fourth fastest collegiate boat in the race behind Saint Mary's (2nd), Villanova (10th) and Boston College (11th).

After their race, Co-captain Katie Helmer, said that all the women in the eight are "...incredibly excited to be part of a crew that medaled at the Head of the Charles. The Charles is one of the biggest and most competitive regattas in the world and medaling is a fantastic accomplishment." Regarding the race, Co-captain Alyssa Sunofsky said "Riverside had been pushing us down the course the entire time and had gained water on us. As we walked through four boats, Riverside walked right with us all the way to finish. I had no real idea where we placed. As we walked back to the trailer, everyone was cheering and Ted told us we got second and said we were the top college eight in our event. We were all thrilled."

Sunofsky also said, "I am very proud of my boat and think that we are starting off the year very well. I am excited to see what the rest of the season will bring us."
