Coastal Carolina redshirt freshman has twice been named to the list this season
FORT WORTH, Texas – For the second time this season, Coastal Carolina football's Grayson McCall was named to the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award's Great 8 list, it was announced on Monday. McCall earned the honor for the first time this season on Sept. 14 following the season-opening win over Kansas (Sept. 12).
The quarterbacks joining McCall on the week five award list were Shane Buechele (SMU), Matt Corral (Ole Miss), Max Duggan (TCU), Mac Jones (Alabama), Devin Leary (NC State), Zach Smith (Tulsa), and Zach Wilson (BYU).
The National Quarterback of the Week will be announced on Wednesday.
Named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week earlier on Monday, the redshirt-freshman quarterback connected on 20-of-29 pass attempts for 322 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception in the Chants' 52-23 win over Arkansas State on Oct. 3. The 20 completions, four touchdown passes, and 322 passing yards were all career-highs for the young Chant quarterback who was making just the third start of his career.
McCall also rushed a career-high 17 times for 44 yards.
Any quarterback named to a Great 8 list during the season who was previously not named to the Davey O'Brien Award preseason watch list will be added to the midseason watch list and will be eligible to be voted a semifinalist for the National Quarterback of the Year.
Coastal (3-0, 1-0 Sun Belt) will continue Sun Belt play next week at No. 23/23 nationally-ranked Louisiana (3-0, 2-0 Sun Belt). Originally scheduled for Oct. 17, the game was moved up to Oct. 10 and will be televised live on ESPN2 at Noon ET/11 a.m. CT.
