HUDSON, Ohio – Hudson scored early in each half Friday night on its way to 47-22 win over Barberton in a Suburban League interdivisional game at Hudson Memorial Stadium.

On the first possession of the game, Hudson (3-0) recovered a Barberton fumble. A few plays later the Hudson offense was in the end zone on a 4-yard run by Drew Lightner.

“That was big,” Lightner said. “We came out strong, got the fumble, scored and got the momentum early.”

Hudson, ranked No. 8 in the cleveland.com Top-25, made it 13-0 in the first quarter on a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jacob Paltani to Luke McLaughlin.

Quarterback Chanden Lee hit Kaine Lowe for a 43-yard touchdown to bring Barberton (0-3) back within a score at 13-7 midway through the second quarter, but Hudson answered with another TD run by Lightner from two yards out to make it 20-7 at the half.

Hudson took the opening kickoff of the second half and scored on the second play of the possession when Paltani found a hole up the middle and ran in from 57 yards out.

“I didn’t see much but I knew if I just got past one person, it’s open back there,” Paltani said. “I saw a lot of green space. It was a dead sprint and I felt so slow. My legs were getting heavy and I was thinking about running too much.”

The Hudson offense again went to work on its next possession with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Paltani to Colin Pierce to make it 34-7 with 8:36 left in the third quarter.

“We talked about keeping the momentum the whole time,” Hudson coach Jeff Gough said. “Everything at halftime from them was we have to get up. It wasn’t about X’s and O’s so much as it was ‘guys we have to get excited.’”

Barberton came back on its next possession and scored on a Cam Macon 2-yard run and recovered an onside kick, but the Hudson defense made a stop to get the ball back at its own 6. Hudson went 94 yards on the ensuing possession and iced the game with a 4-yard touchdown run by Lightner.

“Our offensive line said ‘Coach, we got it,’” Gough said. “It felt like they really wanted to finish that drive and pick up for the defense because the defense was on for like 20 plays in a row. That’s that brotherhood we talk about. It isn’t me, it’s we.”

Ryan Evans added a 4-yard run with 6:43 left, and also had an interception.

Paltani completed 13 of 16 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns and also added 124 yards rushing and a touchdown on 12 carries. Lightner had 84 yards rushing on 16 attempts.

For Barberton, Lee went 33-of-50 for 347 yards and two touchdowns, including a 22-yarder to Derrick Vaughn in the final minute.

Next Friday, Hudson will head to Wadsworth for a Suburban League National Division game, while Barberton will host another National Division team in Brecksville.
