CANARYVILLE — An 8-year-old girl was killed and three other people were injured Monday evening when someone shot into their vehicle in Canaryville, according to Chicago Police.
The shooting occurred around 6:00 p.m. in the 4700 block of South Union Avenue, according to police.
The girl and three adults were in a black SUV that was stopped at a red light facing north on Union Avenue. Another vehicle, a black Dodge Charger, was idling directly behind the car, Chicago Police Chief of Operations Brian McDermott said Monday.
When the light turned green, someone from the Charger vehicle fired multiple shots at the SUV carrying the little girl, McDermott said. The victims’ vehicle drove north on Union before hitting a car and crashing into a tree. The Charger made a u-turn and sped away, heading south, McDermott said.
The 8-year-old was shot in the back and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at at 6:28 p.m. A 30-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man also were taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, both having been shot in the back.
The girl’s mother was injured when their car crashed. All three adults were listed in critical condition, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.
Police have made no arrests and are continuing to investigate.
Police are “saddened and angered that another child has lost her life to senseless gun violence in the city of Chicago,” McDermott said.
