OROVILLE —A local assistance center will open today to help those affected by the North Complex West Zone fires.

Located at 1875 Feather River Blvd., it is at the Oroville Gymnastics Academy.

As of Tuesday morning, the lightning-started fire, which has killed 15,  has burned more than 80,000 acres and is 60 percent contained.

Evacuation orders are still in place for Berry Creek above Simmons Road, Brush Creek, Forbestown above Westar Court and Clipper Mills.

Center

Fire survivors can find help at the local assistance center in Oroville in various areas, including replacing important documents, such as drivers licenses, social security cards, deeds and tax documents.

The center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday for at least three weeks.

Sifting kits will also be available so when residents are permitted back to their properties they can safely search the debris.

FEMA

A representative from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be present to help with registration.

People can register by calling 800-621-3362, visit the website disasterassistance.gov or download the FEMA app on cell phones.

Registering with FEMA opens the door to apply for federal assistance, along with other kinds of help.

FEMA’s individual assistance program provides grants to help eligible survivors with financial assistance that may include rent, home repair, home replacement and other disaster-related needs such as childcare, medical and dental expenses.

Escort service

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office has created an online form for residents to request law enforcement escorts to areas that remain under evacuation orders.

The link for the online request is:   https://forms.gle/QKrkdVwk78qR344t9

The fire information call center will be accepting calls for escort requests starting at 9 a.m. today. The call center number is 530-552-3010, and also can provide evacuation map assistance.

The call center will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, however, the sheriff’s office hopes that requests are made online because of the anticipated high volume of use.

Acreage

As of 7 a.m., the West Zone had burned 81,500 acres, and is 60 percent contained, according to Cal Fire-Butte County. The fire continues to burn west from Forbestown Reservoir Road, along the South Fork of the Feather River toward the Ponderosa Reservoir.

Crews, including California National Guard soldiers who arrived Monday, are constructing control lines to keep the fire from moving into Forbestown, Woodleaf, Clipper Mills and Strawberry Valley.
