Andrei Svechnikov Injury Update

Sunday, 7:30 pm: Earlier this evening, Luke DeCock from the News & Observer tweeted an update on Andrei Svechnikov:

Latest on Svechnikov post-MRI: Not a worst-case scenario. Will be out for a while but could potentially return if Hurricanes advance to conference or Stanley Cup finals. Likely to remain in Toronto bubble at this point.

Obviously from inside the bubble there won’t be a lot of details forthcoming, but knowing that Svechnikov’s injury is not considered to be long term is welcome news. We’ll pass along any additional information as soon as it becomes available.

Yesterday’s News Today

Reading, Listening and Watching

  • It didn’t take long into the first round for the schedule to be thrown into chaos. Here’s how the Canes spent three hours in limbo while the Lightning and Blue Jackets played five overtime periods. [Canes.com]
  • Hurricanes legend David Ayres settled in to watch Game 2 of Canes vs. Bruins at home Thursday night and allowed Mike Zeisberger to follow along via Zoom. [NHL.com]
  • Tripp Tracy caught up with Martin Necas after his two-point night on Thursday for his Digging In With Tripp podcast. [Youtube]
  • Saturday was the deadline for the Hurricanes to sign four drafted college players to Entry Level contracts. Per Cap Friendly, Matt Filipe, Luke Martin, Luke Stevens, and Max Zimmer were not signed by the Canes and are now Unrestricted Free Agents.
  • Another former Hurricanes draft pick was in the news this week. The Vegas Golden Knights signed defenseman Ryan Murphy to an AHL contract. Murphy spent the 2019-20 season in the Kontinental Hockey League. [Golden Knights]
  • Also making news for the Golden Knights, Patrick Brown joined the lineup for last night’s playoff game against the Blackhawks — and scored a goal! Brown also played in one regular season game for Vegas, where he also scored a goal.
  • The news was not so pleasant for Bailey, the L.A. Kings mascot. Apparently his handler (?) is being sued for sexual misconduct and suspended by the team. [LA Times]
  • As a player, former Hurricane Manny Malhotra won over dressing rooms with his selfless, hardworking approach to the game. That same lunchpail attitude has made the Canucks assistant one of the NHL’s most promising young coaches. [SportsNet]
  • Montreal head coach Claude Julien was hospitalized Wednesday, complaining of chest pain after the Canadiens loss to the Flyers in Game One of their playoff series. Julien underwent successful stent surgery and was released to return home to Montreal, where he will recover and quarantine before being allowed to rejoin the team. In the meantime, former Hurricanes head coach and current Canadiens associate Kirk Muller assumed head coaching responsibilities and led the Canadiens to a 5-0 rout of the Flyers on Friday. [ESPN] [NY Times]
  • How prepared is Kirk Muller for this opportunity? Find out what Jeff Skinner and John-Michael Liles had to say about their former head coach. [The Athletic $]
  • Speaking of John-Michael Liles, he’s covering the Avalanche as a studio analyst for Altitude Sports and had an awkward but adorable work-from-home moment during Saturday’s post-game.
  • “This sport deserves better from these absolute morons who make mainstream and casual fans look at it as a niche sport played by small-minded white people.” Much was said by hockey media yesterday with regard to Tuukka Rask’s decision to opt out of the bubble and the net front altercation between Zdeno Chara and Andrei Svechnikov that resulted in an apparent injury (and no, we have no new news in that regard). The Athletic’s Thomas Drance took a couple of media members to task yesterday on the Rink Wide radio show in Vancouver. The tweets link to both the full interview and also a two-minute sound bite. Either/both are worth your time.
