STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A homeless man who was already arrested twice this summer in unsettling encounters with strangers has been charged with randomly shoving an 8-year-old girl to the pavement in New Dorp, police said.

Vondell Cox, 20, was charged around 12 p.m. Thursday in connection with the Monday afternoon attack on the girl, according to a statement from the NYPD.

He is facing endangering the welfare of a child, assault and harassment charges, police said.

Cox was spotted in Tottenville Thursday morning and was taken into custody, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

The arrest comes less than 12 hours after cops released a surveillance image of a man sought for questioning in connection with the incident. The photo came from a deli in the vicinity of the attack.

The New York Police Department released the image of a man wanted in connection with the assault of a 8-year-old girl in New Dorp Monday. (NYPD)

Police responded near Edison Street and Bryant Avenue at around 1:40 p.m. Monday after a man allegedly pushed the 8-year-old to the ground, causing minor lacerations to her knees, according to an NYPD statement.

The child, who police previously said was with her 41-year-old mother at the time of the incident, refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

The individual fled the scene in an unknown direction, according to the police statement.

A witness said the girl was bleeding and in tears, at which point the mother yelled something at their alleged attacker, the Advance/SILive.com previously reported.

“(The girl) was crying, and said, ‘this man was chasing us, and he pushed me for no reason, I don’t know why he did it,’” the witness said.

It was not yet clear if Cox had retained a lawyer as of Thursday afternoon.

2 PRIOR ARRESTS THIS SUMMER

Cox was arrested on July 3 after he allegedly followed a 36-year-old man in the rear of the Eltingville Transit Center at 90 Wainwright Ave. and rubbed his body against him, the Advance/SILive.com previously reported.

Cox put his hands down the front and back of the victim’s pants, touching the man’s genitals, according to the criminal complaint and police.

Cox was apprehended within minutes, several blocks away in the 500 block of Drumgoole Road West and charged with misdemeanor forcible touching and sexual abuse, according to police.

He was issued a temporary order of protection and released on his own recognizance, according to public records.

Cox was also arrested in connection with a separate incident on June 15 at about 10:55 a.m. where he allegedly used a rear, sliding door in the kitchen to enter a home in the vicinity of Lucille Avenue and Bloomingdale Road in Rossville. A 48-year-old woman told police that she was clearing out her garage and when she re-entered her home, she saw the suspect standing at the staircase.

Cox allegedly said, “move, move,” and then left the home, according to police and the complaint.

No items were reported stolen in the Rossville incident, according to police.

“That’s me, I was looking for food,” the criminal complaint quoted Cox as saying to police after he was shown surveillance images of the alleged home intrusion.

Cox was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass and trespass in the incident in Rossville, according to the criminal complaint.

He was released on his own recognizance in that case as well.
