Eight people were arrested for trespassing Monday night after police said they hung a banner across the Citgo sign in Boston.
The eight people were already released on bail, the Boston Police Department said.
At around 8 p.m. on Monday, a banner reading “Climate Justice Now” covered the lower portion of the iconic sign at Kenmore Square.
Extinction Rebellion Boston hung the banner to protest the city’s climate policies, according to the organization’s Twitter account.
“We must rapidly transition from an energy system reliant on fossil fuel burning to one reliant on sustainable, zero-emissions sources. It’s time to remove fossil fuels as a societal landmark,” said a tweet, which was accompanied by a picture of the banner hanging from the Citgo sign.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was tagged in several tweets.
According to its website, Extinction Rebellion Boston is a non-violent movement with the goal of helping humanity in the face of ecological and societal crises.
Extinction Rebellion was founded in the United Kingdom in 2018 after 6,000 protesters shut down five bridges in London, according to its website.
