NJ Primary Elections 2020: District 8 - NJ Spotlight

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

The 8th Congressional District includes parts of New Jersey’s largest cities — Newark and Jersey City — as well as other portions of Hudson and Essex counties, and some Bergen and Union municipalities.

This is one of two districts where a majority of voters (54%) are registered Democrats. Just 9% of voters are affiliated with the Republican Party and most of the rest are unaffiliated.

In the heart of the densely populated northeast of the state, this district is New Jersey’s only majority Hispanic district, with close to 56% of the population Latino, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. It is also the youngest district, with a median age of under 35 years old and the smallest percentage of the population with at least a high school diploma — just eight in 10. Almost 15% of residents have incomes below the federal poverty limit, the highest rate in the state.

Rep. Albio Sires, a Democrat, has two primary opponents: Hector Oseguera and Will Sheehan.

Jason Todd Mushnick filed for the Republican Party.

CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATES

ALBIO SIRES: DEMOCRAT (incumbent)

In his 14th year in the House, Sires was born in Cuba and came to the United States at age 11 with his family. He first ran for Congress as a Republican in 1986 and lost. He was an independent for a time and became a Democrat in 1998.Sires went on to become mayor of West New York and speaker of the state Assembly before winning his House seat in 2006.

Sires has a Facebook campaign page, although it appears to have been updated only within the last week. According to the biography on his House page, Sires serves on three committees and chairs the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He is a co-sponsor of legislation that would require the state to meet the Paris Climate Agreement. Sires also supports the Democratic Party’s plan to rebuild the nation’s manufacturing industry. He is also co-sponsoring several measures meant to address human rights abuses in other countries.

A former teacher and business owner, Sires holds a master’s degree in Spanish from Middlebury College. He has been endorsed by the Democratic parties in each of the four counties that make up the district. Sires lives in West New York with his wife. Follow this link for more information.

HECTOR OSEGUERA: DEMOCRAT

The son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, Oseguera received a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from Boston University and a law degree from New England School of Law. He is an anti-money laundering officer at UBS financial services company.

Oseguera is a progressive who has worked for the campaigns of Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the Bronx. His website has a robust section explaining his positions on issues. For instance, Oseguera supports a social housing program and amending the Fair Housing Act to prevent discrimination based on the use of housing vouchers or federal assistance. He would restore the Voting Rights Act and support increased oversight of police departments with patterns of race-based policing. He backs a $15 per hour federal minimum wage, a 45% tax rate on all income over $5 million and the elimination of tax loopholes that benefit the wealthy.

Oseguera has received endorsements from a number of organizations, including NJ-08 for Progress and Progressive Democrats of New Jersey. He lives in Union City. Follow this link for more information.

WILL SHEEHAN: DEMOCRAT

Sheehan is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, a former SEAL TEAM intelligence officer and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

According to his campaign website, Sheehan supports increasing health care options for female veterans, shortening wait times at Veterans Administration medical facilities and creating a new federal program to provide financial assistance to school districts to prevent teacher layoffs. He supports the provision of military aid and precision-guided munitions to Israel and opposes the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

The clerk of the House has no personal financial disclosure filing for Sheehan, who lives in Bayonne. He has been endorsed by the Port Driver Association of New York and New Jersey and the Pier Trucker Association.  Follow this link for more information.

JASON TODD MUSHNICK: REPUBLICAN

Mushnick is lawyer who lives in Jersey City. He ran unsuccessfully for the state Assembly last year. Mushnick appears to have no campaign website. The clerk of the House has no personal financial disclosure form listed for Mushnick, nor does the Federal Election Commission have any campaign finance information for him.
