When I was shopping at New Leaf in Aptos, a middle-aged couple turned their backs as soon as they saw me as if they were sheltering themselves from the virus. My son also got an accusatory look while shopping at Safeway.
I have been engaged in intercultural programs collaborating with schools in Santa Cruz for many years, and am proud to be a part of this community that welcomes diversity. Unjustifiably, we were blamed for the virus because of our race. I tried to shrug off this experience, but I hear of similar or worse attacks against Asians.
Martin Luther King Jr. stated “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Please speak up for those who have suffered injustice before us and for those who would be the next targets of hate. Hate is a virus. It won’t help save lives.
— Jinsu Kim, Aptos
The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
