Asian man is victim in latest coronavirus-fueled hate crime - New York Post

An Asian man was kicked in the back and told to go back to his country Tuesday night on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in the most recent known coronavirus-inspired hate attack, police and sources said.

The 59-year-old man told cops he was walking south on Madison Avenue near East 104th Street around 9 p.m. when a teen kicked him in the back, causing him to fall to the ground.

“F–king Chinese coronavirus,” the kid barked before telling the victim to go back to his country, according to sources.

The man’s hands and knees were injured, but he refused medical attention, cops said.

The victim told police officers the same teen spat in his face and said Chinese have coronavirus on Saturday, police sources said.

The attacker is described as a teenager who stands about 5 feet 8 and weighs about 160 pounds, cops said.

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating both incidents reported by the man.

The attack happened on the same day a 23-year-old Asian woman was punched in the face in Midtown by a man who was yelling: “Where is your corona mask, you Asian b—h.”

The victim was walking on 34th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues around 9:30 a.m. when she was attacked. Cops are also probing that case as a possible hate crime, according to sources. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital with a possible dislocated jaw, sources said.

The NYPD has logged 0 hate crimes against Asians for 2020 as of March 8, according to NYPD records, which show there were three hate crimes reported against Asians in the same period last year.

Mayor de Blasio addressed recent hate crimes against Asians at an afternoon press conference on the virus.

“Right now we’ve seen particularly troubling instances of discrimination directed at Asian communities, particularly the Chinese community,” de Blasio said. “This is unacceptable.”

“We’ve talked openly and honestly about the fact that too many hate crimes go unreported,” he said. “I am beseeching you all to tell the members of your communities that if they are the victims of a hate crime it must be reported to the NYPD so we can act on it so we can find the perpetrators and there will be consequences so we can stop them from doing it to another person.”

The NYPD has logged 0 hate crimes against Asians for 2020 as of March 8, according to NYPD records, which show there were three hate crimes reported against Asians in the same period last year. Revised hate crime data will be available on Monday, the NYPD said.
