Asian community at state university in NY seeking justice after students host coronavirus-themed party - KVOA Tucson News

ALBANY, N.Y. - Members of the Asian community at The State University of New York at Albany, or UAlbany, reacted to a coronavirus-themed party that was hosted by fellow students over the weekend.

A video of the student-hosted party was posted to Instagram on Sunday.

The students that make up the UAlbany Asian American Alliance are requesting that the university take several actions regarding the event and are hoping to bring justice.

The UAlbany Asian American Alliance posted the following statement in an Instagram post on Monday.

"As members of the Asian community on campus, your party is not funny and completely insensitive. The real life affects of this virus has led to not only mass stereotyping of Asian people, but also hundreds of deaths across the world."

The Asian American Alliance is requesting that the Dean of Student Office investigates "the illegal student group and related UAlbany students, requiring them to delete this video and to apologize on their Instagram homepage."

In addition, the Asian community organization is asking the Office of President to "inform all UAlbany students to stop racism and disrespectful slogans in any situation, especially coronavirus hate crime against Asian students and scholars based on groundless suspicion of virus hosts."

The statement continues to say that the Office of President's precaution is essential to preventing the crime from reoccurring in New York state.

Thirdly, the Asian American Alliance at UAlbany is asking the International Student and Scholar Office and Student Health Services to "take necessary actions to protect Asian students' and scholars' physical health and mental health."

The organization concludes its statement on Instagram with the following:

"Diseases that affect non-white populations are radicalized in a way that stems from the innate xenophobia of American society. It serves to dehumanize the affected population. This happened with Ebola and has shown its face again with the Coronavirus. The video posted on social media has 6,049 clicks until 11:26 a.m., February 17th. It is reasonable for us to require the university to take similar reactions."

The Asian American Alliance at The State University of New York at Albany is made up of the Chinese Student Association, Albany State Indian Alliance, UAlbany Liga Filipina, Association of Southeast Asian Students, and the Korean Student Association, according to the alliance's Instagram page.

According to the Associated Press, the coronavirus has infected nearly 30,000 people across the globe and has killed 1,868 people in China alone as of Monday.
