As China pushes its “Belt and Road Initiative” across Asia to strengthen its economic links with new transport routes, the Mekong River faces possible irreversible changes as Chinese engineers seek to detonate stretches of the river to allow 500 ton shipping boats. Steve Sandford reports from the Thai port of Chiang Kong on how these detonations could affect the Mekong, which flows through six Asian nations.
