Abbasi Expected to Replace Sharif as Pakistan's Next Prime Minister

Pakistan's parliament will elect a new prime minister Tuesday to replace Nawaz Sharif, who resigned last week following a corruption investigation.

Former oil minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a longtime Sharif ally, is expected to easily win election in the 342-member National Assembly, which is dominated by Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party.

Abbasi is expected to serve as interim prime minister until Sharif's younger brother, Shabazz, the chief minister of Punjab province, wins a parliamentary seat in a by-election. Opposition leaders have criticized the political maneuvering as dynastic and undemocratic.

Sharif stepped down after Pakistan's high court found he failed to disclose a monthly salary from a Dubai-based company owned by his son. The ruling was part of an investigation into corruption allegations against family.
