The United States has requested a closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council on North Korea's latest missile launch, a spokesman for the U.S. mission to the United Nations said on Tuesday.
The spokesman said the meeting of the 15-member council was likely to be scheduled for Wednesday.
Pyongyang said on Tuesday it had successfully test-launched a first intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, which analysts said could put all of Alaska in range for the first time.
U.S. officials have so far been cautious in responding to the latest North Korean test. The U.S. military, in fact, has not even yet confirmed the launch involved an ICBM, instead estimating it to be an "intermediate range" ballistic missile.
"We are working with our interagency partners on a more detailed assessment," said a statement from U.S. Pacific Command. White House officials did not immediately respond to VOA's request for further comment.
White House correspondent William Gallo contributed to this report.
