Asian stocks fall after Wall St breaks 4-day winning streak - Bay to Bay News

BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets sank Thursday after Chinese manufacturing weakened and Russian shelling around Ukraine's capital shook hopes of progress in peace talks.

Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo declined while Seoul gained. Oil fell nearly $7 per barrel in New York but stayed above $100.

Wall Street's benchmark S&P 500 index fell 0.6% on Wednesday after U.S. economic growth was weaker than expected.

Russian forces shelled areas near Kyiv and another city Wednesday after Moscow said it would scale back operations there to promote trust. Negotiators were meeting in Turkey to try to end the five-week-old war.

Russia is "pouring cold water on headlines of constructive cease-fire talks,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a report.

The Shanghai Composite Index lost less than 0.2% to 3,261.04 after an index of manufacturing activity fell to a five-month low after China shut down much of Shanghai and two smaller industrial cities to fight coronavirus outbreaks.

The Hang Seng in Hong Kong sank 0.8% to 22,062.09.

“The near-term outlook remains highly uncertain,” Julian Evans-Pritchard of Capital Economics said in a report. “Even if the outbreak is brought under control soon, it will still take a while for the economy to get back on track.”

The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo shed 0.2% to 27,977.98 while the Kospi in Seoul gained 0.6% to 2,761.78.

Sydney's S&P-ASX 200 advanced 0.4% to 7,546.00. New Zealand and Singapore declined while Jakarta advanced.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 declined to 4,602.45 after Commerce Department data showed the U.S. economy grew at an annual pace of 6.9% in the final quarter of 2021, below forecasts.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.2% to 35,228.81. The Nasdaq composite lost 1.2% to 14,442.27.

Markets have mostly gained ground this week as talks between Russia and Ukraine seemed to show progress.

Unease over possible disruption of Russian oil and gas exports added to concern about higher U.S. interest rates and a Chinese economic slowdown.

On Thursday, the Commerce Department is due to release its personal income and spending report for February. The Labor Department will release U.S. employment data for March on Friday.

In energy markets, benchmark U.S. crude tumbled $6.67 to $101.15 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $3.58 on Wednesday to $107.82. Brent crude, the price basis for international oil trading, fell $5.29 to $106.15 per barrel in London. It rose $3.22 the pervious session to $113.45.

President Joe Biden is preparing to order the release of up to 1 million barrels of oil per day from the U.S. strategic petroleum reserve to help control energy prices, according to two people familiar with the decision who spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview it.

The steady release from the reserves would be a meaningful amount and come near to closing the domestic production gap relative to February 2020, before the coronavirus caused a steep decline in oil output.

The dollar advanced to 122.22 yen from Wednesday's 121.78 yen. The euro rose to $1.1167 from $1.1159.

Organization of Asian leaders open up about being mixed race, international and adopted - Central Michigan Life

The Organization of Asian Leaders came together for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month to discuss their experiences of being mixed race, international and adopted students.

Inside a nearly-full Sarah and Daniel Opperman Auditorium at Central Michigan University, student panelists talked about their experiences with racial stereotypes, language barriers, family and mental health.

The discussion was moderated by Jacqueline Huynh, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions.

One topic was the idea of the model minority myth in Asian cultures.

The model minority myth perpetuates the idea that Asian Americans are particularly successful in academic, economic and cultural domains, according to the Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession.

"Many people think this is a positive myth," said panelist Tyler del Rosario. "But we need to abolish that because everyone takes different paths in life."

Mitz Krueger discussed her experience with negative effects of the myth.

"There definitely have been times when I felt that I was being put into a box," Krueger said. "I use the analogy of a box (being) like a house, for some people, that house is great and it's perfect, but it wasn't built for me."

Other students on the panel discussed overcoming obstacles surrounding language. Ezaz Sabuz said that language was a barrier for him, as well as other international students.

"Coming from a different country that speaks a different language, it's always difficult for us to connect with English-speaking people," he said.

Sabuz said that these situations can portray individuals incorrectly, keeping people from sharing ideas.

"I couldn't convince (people) that this is not because I'm an introvert or I don't like people," he said.

For others on the panel, the language barrier comes from within their family. Xandria Sink learned Japanese as a first language but said after living in the United States, she has lost some of those skills.

"I definitely feel a little bit of a language barrier every time I go back (to Japan), and it does hurt because it feels like my childhood, and since I'm not using it, I'm losing it," she said.

Panelists discussed mental health and discovered it was often unexplored, and sometimes ignored in their families and cultures. For some, the pandemic exacerbated this.

"I remember going through Instagram and see all the anti-asian hate," Jake Kapusansky said. "Going out as an Asian man, seeing all these different things happen to people that look exactly like me was so scary."

While the pandemic did impact Kapusansky's mental health, he said he saw a positive side to how the pandemic changed the conversation.

"I honestly think all of us in this room, we're on a new wave and as we continue to talk about these things and normalize them, more people can actually open up about their feelings and be in a place of vulnerability and be okay with that," he said.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month events will continue to be held through April 15.

FIH Hockey Women's Junior World Cup in South Africa - April 1-12

Midfielder Salima Tete will lead the 20-member Indian squad in the ninth edition of the event. India will kick-start their campaign on April 2 with their first group stage match against Wales followed by their game against Germany a day later. Their last group-stage match is scheduled for April 5 against Malaysia. Top two teams from each group make it to the quarterfinals.

ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - April 9-19

This is the second World Cup of the year and country's top rifle, and pistol shooters are expected to feature. In the year's first World Cup held in Cairo, India topped the medals tally with four gold medals, two silvers and one bronze.

Archery World Cup (Stage I) in Antalya, Turkey - April 18-24

This is the first of four stages of the World Cup. The Indian squad for recurve events comprises of Tarundeep Rai, Jayanta Talukdar, Neeraj Chauhan, Sachin Gupta, Ridhi, Komalika Bari, Ankita Bhakat and Simranjeet Kaur.

AFC Champions League group stage - April 15 to 1 May

Last year's ISL league shield winners Mumbai City FC have been drawn in group B in the west region of the 2022 AFC Champions League. They will play against Al Jazira (UAE), Al Shabab (Saudi Arabia), and Air Force Club (Iraq).

Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham - July 28 to August 8

It is unlikely India will better the 2018 medal tally of 66, which included 26 golds, due to absence of shooting, which fetched the most number of medals - 16. Birmingham 2022 will also not have archery and India decided to send second-string hockey teams for the event. Still, the country can expect medals in wrestling, boxing, and badminton. The one sport to watch out for is cricket, which will be a women's T20 tournament.

Chess Olympiad in India, Chennai - July 28 to August 10

Chennai will host the big-ticket chess event where over 190 nations will compete. Here's a lowdown on how India stepped in as last-minute hosts and what it means.

BWF World Championships in Tokyo, Japan - August 21-28

Last year's event was a success for India as both Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen qualified to the semifinals with the former beating his compatriot to enter the final. Srikanth eventually lost the final against Loh Kean Yew. This time, the spotlight will be on Lakshya who made significant progress in the last 12 months, beating top players like Viktor Axelsen, Anders Antonsen and Lee Zii Jia.

Japan Open Super 750 badminton tournament - August 30 to September 4

Another top competition follows just days after the Worlds. Japan Open returns to the tour schedule after a gap of two years. Previous two editions were cancelled due to the pandemic.

Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou - September 10-25

A significant event for Indian athletes. At the Asiad 2018, India recorded their best-ever haul of 70 medals, which included 16 golds. They would like to take the overall number higher in Hangzhou with key events being athletics, shooting, wrestling and badminton.

World Wrestling Championships - September 10-18

The tournament will take place in Belgrade, Serbia. The dates are not clashing with the Asian Games because wrestling events at the Asiad are scheduled to take place after September 18.

FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in India - October 11-30

The second time India will host a FIFA tournament after the U-17 men's World Cup in 2017. India were earlier scheduled to host the 2020 U-17 World Cup but it was postponed to 2021 before being cancelled due to the pandemic. Thomas Dennerby, who was the head coach of the senior team at the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2022 in India, will be in charge of the team.

Archery World Cup Final in Tlaxcala, Mexico - October 15 and 16

The best eight archers in each category from the four World Cups will play in this final.

ISSF shooting World Championships in Cairo - October 12-25

A crucial year for Indian shooters will end with the World Championships in October. Both the Asian Games and Worlds will provide a great opportunity for the country's top shooters to impress and grab medals after a disappointing performance at the Tokyo Olympics.

French Open Super 750 badminton tournament - October 25-30

Yami bags $50M Series B to boost its online Asian marketplace - TechCrunch

When Alex Zhou, founder and CEO of Yami, moved to the Midwest for college in 2007, he had limited access to Asian groceries and products. Zhou had to drive two hours to purchase his favorite Asian products at the nearest local Asian market. The experience inspired him to launch Yami, a direct-to-consumer marketplace for Asian food, skincare products, and household goods in the U.S., in 2013 after moving to Los Angeles.

Yami wants to offer an authentic offering of Asian culture, tradition, and products to both Asian Americans and other Americans interested in Asian culture. Zhou noted that Yami provides more than 260,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs) across food, beauty, health, and home categories with over 4,000 brands.

Yami announced Wednesday it has raised a $50 million Series B co-led by Altos Ventures and Balsam Bay Partners, with participation from previous backers J.P Morgan and GGV Capital. The Series B brings its total raised to $60 million, said Zhou, who did not disclose its valuation.

The Los Angeles-headquartered startup will use the latest funding to further its U.S. expansion by opening up another warehouse in New Jersey to speed up delivery times, Zhou said.

On top of that, it plans to invest in technology like artificial intelligence and big data, which will strengthen its supply chain and improve customer experience, Zhou told TechCrunch. Its new technology will allow hyper-personalization, meaning that AI and real-time data deliver more relevant products and competitive pricing to shoppers from different backgrounds. At the same time, sellers and vendors will have more insights into product sourcing and inventory forecast, Zhou said.

Yami also considers entering Canada to offer its service as early as next year after the further expansion in the U.S., Zhou told TechCrunch.

With the number of Asian Americans in the U.S. nearly tripling over the past three decades, Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing consumer segment in the U.S., valuing the Asian American consumer market at $1.2 trillion, as per Nielsen’s data in 2020.

Yami claims it has surpassed 2 million customers in the U.S. since its inception. There are some other players focused on specific areas like fresh grocery and snack subscriptions, but Yami is the largest Asian marketplace in terms of customer numbers and products selections, Zhou said. The company currently has more than 300 employees globally, with offices in the U.S., China, and Japan.

The Asian diaspora needs to reckon with our anti-Blackness - UConn Daily Campus

One of the most striking moments of racial solidarity during the Black Power movement of the late-1960s is immortalized in a grainy photo of a young Japanese man donning the iconic leather jacket and black beret of the Oakland-born Black Panther Party. One hand is raised to the air in a clenched fist, a symbol recognized around the world to represent the power of people’s movements and the possibility of liberation; in the other hand rests a poster board sign that reads, “YELLOW PERIL SUPPORTS BLACK POWER.”

Unfortunately, this striking moment turned out to be merely that — a moment. When Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, the co-founders of the Black Panther Party, asked Richard Aoki to speak about the infamous US policy of Japanese-American internment, they had no idea that this “Japanese radical cat,” as Seale called him, had been an informant of the FBI since 1950.

With Black radical organizations and other militant left-wing social movements that operate above ground being stomped out through state surveillance and violence, the ways in which the Asian diaspora can exercise anti-Black racism and enforce white supremacy look far different than they did in the 1960’s and 70’s, today taking a more systemic fashion in culture, politics, and economics. If we are serious about Black and Indigenous liberation and putting an end to white supremacy, it is incumbent to point a critical eye at anti-Blackness and white supremacy in our communities.

Moving into a large university with a truly global student body, the most interesting moment of “culture shock” I experienced was the concept of an “Asian babyboy” (ABB) or “babygirl” (ABG). In fact, I didn’t even hear the term until nearly halfway into my second semester on campus and becoming more involved in Asian spaces.

ABB or ABG is a tongue-in-cheek meme among college-age Asians — particularly East Asian — people which refers to some of the trends they see develop. These include thick eyeliner, getting tattoos, adopting high fashion, and frequenting the boba tea spot.

This may seem like a fun and harmless trend, however the most outstanding yet unrecognized aspect of the ABG/ABB archetype is the appropriation of Black culture by adopting a “Blaccent” and wearing makeup look and clothes that Black people are often derided for. It’s not cultural “exchange” when communities adopt elements of another culture and claim it as unique to them. Asian celebrities like Awkwafina or Aziz Ansari’s use of African American Vernacular English, also known as AAVE or Ebonics, are models for the double standard that exists between Black and non-Black communities.

The utilization of black cultural trends by many Asians and Asian Americans is a trend which has led to a division between “tasteful” versions of these trends. Many of these trends are viewed as unprofessional when seen in Black communities, but seen as fun, cute, or desirable in Asian communities. Photo by Gayatri Malhotra on Unsplash.

Cultural appropriation is one of the more mundane but nonetheless significant examples of anti-Blackness in the Asian diaspora, itself being rooted in material systems like the structure of the economy, government, and other societal arrangements. Other forms include the aspiration of greater Asian representation in oppressive institutions such as the police, military, or the political and economic ruling class.

Not unlike the story of Richard Aoki, the young FBI informant, is that of Tou Thao, a Vietnamese-American Minneapolis police officer who stood by as white officer Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd in 2020. Both were participants in violent arms of the state while simultaneously being from relatively marginalized backgrounds. An Axios article from 2021 bemoans the fact that Asian Americans are underrepresented in law enforcement, comprising about 2%, thinking this to be a form of systemic oppression against our community; rather, bolstering Asian participation in law enforcement would simply mean the diversification of state violence against Black people, mentally ill people and people with disabilities, and poor and homeless people — the latter three obviously include Asians.

Being an Asian accomplice in the struggle for Black liberation under white supremacy requires us to criticize friends and family members who join the police and military, the consequences of which implicate increased violence against marginalized people within and outside of US borders. It requires understanding that an Asian CEO or billionaire is not a win for the community when that position necessitates the theft of wealth from the working class.

It requires understanding that media which highlights Asian accomplishments such as Nextshark and Asianfeed are inherently counterproductive when they only showcase wealthy celebrities and media figures, and often exclude people of South, Southeast, Central, and West Asian descent. It is incumbent on us to highlight how capitalism and imperialism impoverish and prey on Asian workers and migrants as well as our Black and Brown siblings.

Reckoning with anti-Black racism in our community is a hands-on effort that requires confronting our community members and having honest dialogues on a level playing field. Yes, it will involve criticisms and unfortunate truths — your dad will refuse to believe that “the joke” he loves to tell is racist and your military cousin will be reluctant to acknowledge their role in the deadly military-industrial complex. Regardless of these difficulties, the process of resolving these contradictions through moments of struggle and catharsis are required for meaningful social change, and together, we can conduct them head on.

Community dialogues shares Asian American Pacific Islander stories

The Fresno State Asian Faculty and Staff Association is hosting two Asian American Pacific Islander Community Dialogues to share stories and perspectives from local Asian and Asian American community leaders, faculty and staff. The first session will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 30 on Zoom. Six local AAPI leaders will talk about their experiences with the pandemic and Asian hate crimes and how their agencies addressed those challenges. The second session will be held virtually from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 5 with five Fresno State faculty and staff who will speak about their unique experiences in the Central Valley and at the University. Asian Americans in Philadelphia: History and timeline - WHYY

In May 2020, PBS broadcast a groundbreaking five-part documentary series called Asian Americans that chronicled the contributions and challenges of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) throughout our nation’s history. This was a significant milestone for AAPI representation in public television and an excellent educational resource unto itself. Acknowledging the rich untold AAPI history in Philadelphia, WHYY then began work on a local series – Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: A Philadelphia Story.

From the initial research stage, Japanese American media scholar and historian Rob Buscher was brought into the series as a consultant. To help guide the series production team as they developed episodes with thematic correlations across time periods and communities, Rob compiled a consolidated historical timeline from various community history sources in the Greater Philadelphia region. The timeline is a good resource for general education on these subjects, and makes an excellent companion piece to the series by providing context and granular detail on specific events referenced in each episode.

Spanning from the late 1700s to present day, the timeline is divided into six periods based on legislative context, immigration trends, and overarching narratives that characterize the experiences of the AAPI community in each era. Given the exceptional diversity of these communities, the production team acknowledges that not all of the events included will reflect the lived experiences of all members of the AAPI demographic. However, we hope this will aid others both within and beyond the AAPI community to better understand the historical trends experienced by these communities at-large.

1700s to 1882

Philadelphia was the second largest city in the British Empire when the Revolutionary War was fought. Given the role that Britain’s East India Company played in empire-wide commerce and trade, it is highly likely that South Asian sailors were present in the busy port city even before the Federal Period. After the Revolutionary War, the city continued to build on the naval trade routes to Asia. Prominent Philadelphians like Stephen Girard and Benjamin Chew made fortunes from the “Old China Trade.” Bringing silk, tea, and other Chinese goods into the local market, Girard and Chew also engaged in opium smuggling to supplement their fortunes, which contributed to the destabilization of Imperial China in the decades prior to the Opium Wars.

From the 1830s onwards, many Philadelphians developed an interest in “oriental curiosities” exemplified by limited exposure to East Asian culture through traveling exhibitions and Nathan Dunn’s Chinese Museum that formerly stood at present day 9th and Sansom streets. Highly sensationalized exhibits like these catered to Western expectations of Eastern fantasy, profiting from orientalist stereotypes they would ultimately perpetuate within the broader culture. Later at the 1876 Centennial Exposition hosted in present day Fairmount Park, the Japanese Bazaar, Chinese Exhibit, and Filipino Exhibit (included in the Spanish Pavilion) introduced average Philadelphians to East Asian design aesthetics and retail goods.

That same year Philadelphia’s Chinatown was first recorded at the 900 block of Race Street, which was largely populated by Chinese bachelors who operated laundries or worked in nearby factories. Most of these men came to Philadelphia fleeing anti-Chinese violence in the Western states. The anti-Chinese sentiments in California and elsewhere in the West would influence Congress to pass the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, which enacted a ten-year moratorium on Chinese immigration that was extended indefinitely in 1892. After the Chinese Exclusion Act, city police and health department targeted Philadelphia Chinatown with a wave of evictions and business closures, reflecting national sentiments of that time.

1882 to 1924

On a national level, this time period encapsulates a major departure in US foreign policy from isolationism to expansionism, and back to domestic isolationism by the time that the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924 was written into law. Starting with the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and subsequent US annexation of Hawaii in 1898, the US military and business interests began moving westward across the Pacific. Following the 1898 Spanish-American War, the US formally annexed the Philippines and Guam, and soon after added American Samoa to their growing list of Pacific territorial possessions in 1899.

As a result of these expansionist policies, colonial subjects began immigrating to Philadelphia in small numbers from each of these territories. Philadelphia’s Filipino community was first established at the turn of the century, many arriving during or immediately after the Philippine-American War. After the conflict ended in 1902, nearly a hundred Filipino students were sent to Philadelphia to study medicine, some returning to the Philippines and others settling in the region. A number of Filipino doctors and nurses who did immigrate back to the Philippines would later return during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic to help Philadelphia manage its public health crisis. In addition to the Filipino students, dozens of East and South Asian students began enrolling in local universities as early as the 1880s increasing in numbers with each decade.

The end of this period is characterized by anti-imperialist protests such as the Korean Independence March in 1919, when hundreds of Koreans marched through the streets of Philadelphia to raise awareness about the Japanese Occupation. A group of Indian revolutionaries called the Ghadar Party also operated in the region during this time. Protesting British imperial atrocities, several hundred Indian Sikhs marched alongside a crowd of Irish republicans on St. Patrick’s Day in 1920. This period ended with increasingly hostile anti-immigrant legislation that reflected a growing xenophobia in the aftermath of World War I. With the passage of the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924, the US closed its borders to further immigration from Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, which drastically slowed Asian population growth in Philadelphia until 1965 when nationality quotas were abolished from the immigration system.

1924 to 1965

Although this era saw the exclusion of new Asian immigration to the United States, existing local communities continued to procreate and others from outside the region would resettle in Philadelphia. Despite the relative stagnancy in population growth, Philadelphians showed a growing interest in cultural education and exchange with East Asia in particular during this period. By the late 1920s the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Penn Museum began acquiring architectural elements and other art objects to display in their Japan and China galleries.

Amid Imperial Japan’s military aggression in China throughout the late 1930s, Chinese Americans assumed a more sympathetic position in the eyes of many Americans. In 1939, Archdiocese of Philadelphia began building the Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic Church and School, which opened in 1941. That same year Chinese Christian Church and Center also opened in Chinatown, bringing many resources into a community that had previously lacked outside investment. The US formally allied itself to China after Imperial Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, and two years later the Magnusson Act of 1943 restored immigration privileges in limited numbers from China. Another result of the Second World War, Japanese Americans living on the West coast were subject to forced removal and mass incarceration throughout the war years in American concentration camps. In the aftermath of their detention, approximately 7,000 Japanese Americans resettled in the Greater Philadelphia region from 1942-1947.

The postwar era saw many changes in US foreign policy with the start of the Cold War that once again resulted in China, and by association some Chinese Americans, being treated with suspicion after the Communist Revolution of 1949. In 1952 the Immigration and Naturalization Act was passed, which for the first time allowed Asian immigrants to become naturalized US citizens. Spurred into action by the civil rights movement sweeping the country, local Japanese and Chinese Americans joined the fight for Black Liberation, participating in freedom marches and Black voter registration. As a result of the allyship shown by local Asian Americans and other immigrant rights activists, African American civil rights leaders began advocating for an end to the racially restrictive immigration quotas that ultimately resulted in the Hart-Celler Immigration Act of 1965.

1965 to 2000

After the Hart-Celler Immigration Act was enacted, large-scale immigration from Asia resumed for the first time since 1924, leading to significant population growth throughout this era. Although the Immigration Act did away with national quotas, a new visa system was put into place that prioritized immigrants from wealthier backgrounds and highly educated individuals who worked in STEM fields. Philadelphia saw its first major influx of South Asian immigrants from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh during this era. Complicating matters further, tens of thousands of refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos also began resettling into the Greater Philadelphia region during the late 1970s – early 1980s. Southeast Asian entrepreneurs established themselves along Asian business corridors on Washington Avenue and South 7th Street. Newer immigrants from South Korea, China, and Bangladesh also began establishing themselves in neighborhoods like North 5th Street, Port Richmond, and Upper Darby during this era, drastically reshaping the demographics of each neighborhood.

While new immigrants and refugees struggled to find their place in the city, the multigenerational descendants of the earlier waves of Asian immigration began finding their voice politically in this era. Amid nationwide urban renewal campaigns of the 1950s-1970s, Philadelphia Chinatown found itself split in half by the Vine Street Expressway. This experience galvanized Chinatown business owners and community leaders, along with youth organizers of a younger generation who together founded the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation to stand up to the city planners and prevent future eviction attempts. Japanese Americans became increasingly vocal about their own mistreatment during WWII, with several high-profile leaders in the national campaign for Redress living in the region.

By the year 2000, Philadelphia’s AAPIs accounted for nearly 5% of the total city population. Compared to 1990 and 1980 census data that recorded the AAPI population as a mere 2.7% and 1.5% respectively, this period demonstrates enormous population growth at a scale that was previously unseen both locally and nationally. As subsequent waves of immigrants and refugees settled in the region, AAPI communities developed a vast infrastructure of community service organizations, activist groups, arts movements, and ethnic studies curriculums that continue to serve the AAPI communities today.

2000 to 2019

In the past two decades AAPIs have become increasingly visible in all areas of life in the city of Philadelphia. Building on the community infrastructure that was established during the 1980s-1990s, this period marked a departure from individual ethnic communities organizing separately. New initiatives were developed from the early 2000s onwards to consolidate Philadelphia’s AAPI communities as a multi-ethnic coalition. Although limited efforts had been made earlier to establish cooperation among various Asian ethnic communities through professional organizations, this work began in earnest when AAPI advisory commissions were established by the Mayor’s and Governor’s offices.

Many existing AAPI community organizations and movements also came to a maturation point in this period, building both institutional framework and broad-based support for AAPI issue advocacy among the broader public. Anti-Asian bias incidents continued throughout this period, but the community increasingly responded through direct actions, making their voices heard through protest and other means of public discourse. Although most multigenerational Asian Americans had been highly involved in local politics since the 1960s, non-partisan voter registration efforts and naturalization initiatives have resulted in higher voter turnout among newer immigrant communities with each election cycle.

In the last two decades, age demographics have also begun to shift away from a super majority of Asian immigrants to include more second and third generation Americans among the local AAPI community. Born and raised in the US, these multigenerational Asian Americans are fully acculturated to American popular culture, business, and politics, and have increasingly brought this knowledge into local movements that have historically been immigrant led. Some of the more recent immigrant and refugee communities remain isolated due to limited English proficiency and general lack of capacity as they navigate resettlement into this region. However, greater efforts are being made by Pan Asian service organizations to provide access to city and community resources that were unavailable to previous generations of Asian immigrants.

2020 COVID-19 Pandemic to Present

As a direct result of political rhetoric early in the COVID-19 pandemic that blamed China for the US public health crisis, AAPIs have faced an intense amount of anti-Asian hate both locally and nationally. These narratives are consistent with past examples dating back to the early period of Chinese immigration when Asian immigrant communities were frequently scapegoated for outbreaks of disease. Although the city of Philadelphia took steps to counter anti-Asian bias in the first months of the pandemic, dozens of high-profile instances of violent crimes and hate speech have plagued the local AAPI communities over the past two years.

However, there is now a greater unity among many AAPI advocacy groups and community organizations that was brought about by the need for collective response to the crisis as East and Southeast Asians have been targeted indiscriminately regardless of their ethnicity. In the aftermath of the Atlanta Spa Shootings on March 16, 2021 in which six East Asian women were killed, AAPI community members organized public protests and marches on a scale that has not been previously witnessed in the city of Philadelphia. While the threat of violence remains a constant concern of the AAPI community, in one sense this current crisis has galvanized public support around the local community and provided opportunities for greater awareness about the myriad issues AAPIs face today.

Chinese tech stocks mostly rise as Meituan jumps more than 14% in mixed Asia trading - CNBC

SINGAPORE — Shares in Chinese tech firms mostly rose in mixed Asia-Pacific trading on Monday, with oil prices falling more than 2%.

By Monday morning in Hong Kong, shares of Meituan soared 14.37% while Tencent climbed 3.82%.

Meituan on Friday posted better-than-expected revenue for the last three months of 2021. The company's revenue for the fourth quarter came in at 49.52 billion yuan ($7.78 billion), above mean analyst expectations for a 49.2 billion yuan print, according to data from Refinitiv Eikon.

The Hang Seng Tech index recovered from earlier losses as it gained 3.05%. Some Chinese tech stocks, however, slipped: Xiaomi edged 0.28% lower while JD.com dropped 2.01%.

"Even if you look now, where we see very significant and sharp falls so that valuations now are at much more reasonable levels, I think it's still quite difficult for investors … to really build the courage to go back in at these levels," Mark Konyn, group chief investment officer at AIA, told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" on Monday.

The broader Hang Seng index in Hong Kong advanced 1.3%.

Mixed Asia-Pacific markets

The broader Asia-Pacific markets struggled for direction in Monday trade.

Mainland China's Shanghai composite slipped 0.13% while the Shenzhen component shed 1.066%.

Data released over the weekend showed Chinese industrial profits grew in the first two months of the year. Profits at China's industrial firms rose 5.0% for the January to February period as compared with a year earlier, according to data released Sunday.

Investors have been watching for clues on policy easing from Chinese authorities amid concerns over the outlook for the economic powerhouse as it grapples with issues such as its worst Covid outbreak since the initial height of the pandemic in early 2020.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 slipped 0.47% while the Topix index ticked 0.13% lower. South Korea's Kospi gained 0.13%.

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.22%. Singapore's Straits Times index also climbed 0.35%.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific outside Japan traded below the flatline.

Oil prices declined in the afternoon of Asia trading hours, with international benchmark Brent crude futures down 2.61% to $117.50 per barrel. U.S. crude futures slipped 2.96% to $110.53 per barrel.

Currencies

The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of its peers, was at 99.114 following a recent climb from below 98.7.

The Japanese yen traded at 123.04 per dollar, weaker than levels below 120 seen against the greenback last week. The Australian dollar was at $0.7527, having risen from below $0.74 last week.

The tragedy spotlighted racism and violence against the Asian-American community and sparked a cry for justice.

LEXINGTON, Ky (WTVQ)- Last year, eight victims, including six Asian-Americans, lost their lives in a tragic string of spa shootings in Atlanta. Atlanta may be hundreds of miles away, but the impact of the tragedy is still being felt in Lexington, where those lives were remembered during a vigil and program in downtown Lexington Sunday afternoon.

“Its’ just sad that this had to happen for us to get together,” said Jennifer Cheng said.

“Asian people were just being targeted. I just didn’t want to face that reality. And it’s like those victims. I just have no words for that kind of violence,” said Teja Sudhakar.

The tragedy spotlighted racism and violence against the Asian-American community and sparked a cry for justice.

“The senseless violence has to stop and we have to get upset and we have to express disappointment and anger. But learning from that mistake and turn that anger and frustration into more productive power,” said organizer and University of Kentucky professor Dr. Keiko Tanaka.

With violence against minorities continuing, some say more needs to be done.

“But there are so many daily things that like people of color endure and Asian people endure that just kind of get swept under the rug,” Sudhakar said.

Organizers say the event was aimed at not only remembering the victims but also to bring unity.

“By bringing people together and remembering those losses, we can come together with unity. Try to make a commitment to building unity across all those class, race, gender, sociality differences,” Dr. Tanaka said.

Now the community is aiming to make sure the Atlanta tragedy doesn’t happen again anywhere else.
